Semrush vs Similarweb: search data or traffic panel

Semrush vs Similarweb compared on 4 October 2026: how each tool gets its numbers, real plan prices, the limits that bite, and which one answers your question.

Semrush vs Similarweb is not a choice between two versions of the same tool. Semrush starts from Google: it knows which keywords a site ranks for and models the clicks that follow. Similarweb starts from browsing behaviour: it estimates every visit a site gets, from every channel, then breaks those visits down.

So the right pick depends on your question. Questions about search (keywords, rankings, backlinks, Google ad copy) belong to Semrush. Questions about the whole site (total visits, where they come from, who the visitors are, how a market splits) belong to Similarweb.

Prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 4 October 2026.

How each one gets its numbers

Semrush builds from a keyword database of 28.9 billion keywords across 142 geo databases, according to its stats page. Organic traffic is estimated from where a site ranks and how often those keywords are searched. That misses direct, referral, social and email visits entirely. Semrush sells a separate Traffic & Market toolkit that estimates total desktop and mobile traffic for any site.

Similarweb describes four sources on its data methodology page: first-party analytics from site and app owners who connect them, an anonymous contributor network from Similarweb products installed on millions of devices, public data, and partnerships with ISPs and measurement companies. Those signals are modelled up to estimates for any site.

The consequence is simple. Semrush is as good as its rankings and volumes, and blind to anything that is not search. Similarweb is as good as its panel, and the panel thins out as sites get smaller. Neither sees anyone's real visits. Our page on how accurate traffic estimates are goes into why.

Similarweb's self-serve prices are published in the structured data on its packages page; the visible page pushes you towards sales. Business plans are quote only. More detail on the Similarweb pricing and Semrush pricing pages.

If you want search data and a traffic panel in one subscription, the arithmetic on annual billing is $117.33 plus $289 for the two Semrush toolkits, about $406 a month, against $333 a month for Similarweb's combined SEO tier. Similarweb is cheaper for that pairing, though its self-serve data is worldwide only (see below). Semrush is far cheaper if search is all you need.

The limits that bite

Similarweb self-serve is worldwide only. The plan cards say "Worldwide view (can not filter by specific country)". If your competitors sell in one country, the entry plans give you their global picture. Country-level data is a Business plan feature.

Similarweb's history is short below Business. Three months on the entry plan, six on the SEO tier, up to 37 months on custom plans. Year-on-year comparisons need a custom contract.

One seat each. Every Similarweb self-serve plan includes one user. The page does not price extra seats.

Semrush's total traffic is an extra toolkit. The $139 plan's traffic numbers are organic search estimates. Calling them a competitor's "traffic" in a report is a common mistake.

Semrush history starts at Pro+. Historical SEO data is listed from the $299 plan.

Pick Semrush if

  • You work in search: keywords, content, links, rankings, Google Ads.
  • You need country-level data without a sales call.
  • Your budget is closer to $139 than $333.

Pick Similarweb if

  • You need total visits and channel mix, not just search.
  • You are sizing a market, benchmarking big brands or checking how a large, well-known competitor is trending.
  • Your competitors are large enough for a panel to measure them well.

Use both if you report on search and on market share to the same people. For search-only head to heads, see Semrush vs Ahrefs and Similarweb vs Ahrefs. For other options, the Similarweb alternatives page lists cheaper options.

If you need something else

If what you actually need is to know what competitors changed each week, neither tool is set up for it. Figo checks each competitor once a week (estimated organic traffic and rankings, new Google, Meta and TikTok ads, page and pricing changes, reviews) and sends a short Monday briefing, from $49 a month for three competitors. Ours, so judge accordingly. It does not estimate total traffic or audience demographics, so it does not replace Similarweb for market research.

Questions people ask

Is Similarweb more accurate than Semrush?

They estimate different things, so the honest answer is to test both on a site whose real numbers you know. Similarweb estimates all visits from every channel. Semrush's SEO plan estimates clicks from organic search only.

Does Semrush have its own version of Similarweb?

Yes. The Traffic & Market toolkit estimates desktop and mobile traffic for any website and covers up to 100 competitors. It costs $289 a month billed annually, on top of any SEO plan.

Is there a free version of Similarweb?

Similarweb.com shows a high-level sample of any site's traffic for free, with limited features and no deeper drill downs. Semrush's free plan gives one demo project and 10 reports a day.

Which is better for a small local business?

Usually neither. Small local sites get too little traffic for panels and keyword databases to measure well. Your own Search Console, the public ad libraries and your competitors' reviews will tell you more.
