Similarweb vs Ahrefs: traffic data or SEO data?
Similarweb vs Ahrefs explained: how each estimates traffic, what each costs today, the plan limits that bite, and which to pick for competitor research.
Similarweb vs Ahrefs is not a contest between two versions of the same tool. Similarweb estimates a website's total traffic from every channel and is built for market and audience questions. Ahrefs estimates organic search traffic from rankings and is built for SEO, with one of the largest backlink indexes available. If you need to know how big a competitor is and where its visitors come from, use Similarweb. If you need to know why it ranks and how to outrank it, use Ahrefs.
Prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 4 October 2026.
How each one gets its numbers
This difference decides everything else.
Ahrefs finds the keywords a site ranks for, then estimates the clicks from each using the ranking position, the monthly search volume and an estimated click-through rate for that position, as Ahrefs explains in its help centre. Its organic traffic index covers 539 million keywords in 185 locations. It is a search estimate by design, and Ahrefs says plainly that Google Analytics will show more because it also counts direct, paid and social visits.
Similarweb names four data sources: first-party analytics that website and app owners share directly, an anonymous contributor network from Similarweb products installed on millions of devices, public data, and partnerships with internet service providers and measurement companies. It models visits from every channel, so it can split a competitor's traffic by marketing channel.
Neither is a meter on the competitor's server. How accurate traffic estimates are covers how far to trust each kind.

What each costs
Similarweb's self-serve plans did not show as a visible table on its pricing page when we read it; the prices below are the offers published in that page's own product data. Check them at checkout.
| Similarweb plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive Intelligence | $199 | $125 | Traffic and engagement, demographics, marketing channels, competitor alerts; 3 months of history |

Ahrefs lists Starter at $29 a month (200 credits a month, monthly renewal only), Lite at $129, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449, all billed monthly, with Enterprise at $1,499 a month on an annual commitment. It says annual billing saves "up to 17%" but did not show annual prices. Extra users cost $40 to $80 a month each depending on plan. The detail is on Similarweb pricing and Ahrefs pricing.
The limits that bite
Similarweb's worldwide view. The two cheaper self-serve plans say "Worldwide view (can not filter by specific country)". For a UK business comparing UK rivals, that is a serious gap: a competitor with large overseas traffic looks bigger than it is in your market. If you need one country, confirm the plan you are buying can filter by it.
Similarweb's short history. Three months on the entry plan and six on the next. A seasonal business cannot compare this peak with last year's.
Ahrefs' search-only view. A competitor growing through partnerships, social, email or brand campaigns barely registers. Ahrefs can show flat organic traffic while the business is booming.
Ahrefs' credits. Lite gives 1,000 credits per user a month and Starter 200. Credits are spent as you open reports, so heavy research weeks eat into the month.
Where each one is genuinely better
Similarweb is better for: total traffic and channel mix, audience demographics, comparing a whole set of competitors on engagement, and any market where most visits do not come from search.
Ahrefs is better for: understanding why a competitor ranks, finding the keywords and pages that drive its search traffic, backlink research and country-level SEO work, all at a lower entry price.
Pick Similarweb or Ahrefs
Pick Similarweb if you need total traffic and the channel split for competitors, audience data, or market sizing, and either a worldwide view is good enough or you can pay for a business plan.
Pick Ahrefs if organic search is your main channel, you need keywords and backlinks, or you want country-level data without a sales call.
Pair them if search and non-search traffic both matter and you have the budget: Similarweb for the market view, Ahrefs for the SEO work underneath it.
When neither is right
If you only want a rough figure for a handful of competitors, free tools get you a ballpark: website traffic checkers compares them, and how to check competitor website traffic walks through doing it by hand. If Semrush is also in the running, Semrush vs Similarweb is the closer fight for traffic data.
Questions people ask
Which is more accurate, Similarweb or Ahrefs?
They estimate different things, so their numbers are not comparable. Ahrefs estimates organic Google clicks; Similarweb estimates total visits from every channel. Both are models, best used to compare sites against each other rather than as exact counts.
Why does Ahrefs show less traffic than Similarweb?
Usually because Ahrefs counts only estimated organic search clicks, while Similarweb also counts direct, referral, social and paid visits. A well-known brand with lots of direct visits looks much bigger in Similarweb.
Does Similarweb have a free version?
Partly. Similarweb's own FAQ calls the free data on its site a high-level sample with a limited set of features and no deeper drill-downs. Its self-serve plans also come with a free trial, length not stated.
Can Ahrefs show where a competitor's traffic comes from?
Only for search. It shows the organic keywords and pages behind its estimate, plus paid search estimates, but not direct, referral, social or email visits.
