SpyFu vs Ahrefs is really ad history against backlinks. SpyFu is cheaper and built around one question: what has a competitor bid on and ranked for, and for how long? Ahrefs is a full SEO suite whose strongest asset is a very large backlink index. If you run Google Ads or want years of a rival's keyword history, SpyFu gives you more of it for less. If links, content research or international SEO matter, Ahrefs is the better tool.

Prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 4 October 2026.

What the data claims say

Both vendors publish big numbers. Read them as marketing, but they show where each one invests.

  • SpyFu (homepage): 13.1 billion keywords, 7.2 trillion search results indexed, 152 million websites, 38 countries and "18+ years" of historical data. It also claims "20x more paid keywords and ads" than Semrush and Ahrefs. That is SpyFu's own comparison and has not been independently verified.
  • Ahrefs (big data page): 28.7 billion filtered keywords across 217 locations, 35.0 trillion external backlink records, 209.5 million domains and 16 years of data. It says its paid search data is aggregated at country level.

The feature lists follow the same split. SpyFu goes deep on search ads and ranking history in fewer countries. Ahrefs goes wide on countries and the link graph.

Where SpyFu wins

Google Ads history. SpyFu sells a competitor's Google Ads campaign and ad test history, and says you can "see the results of every ad split test they've ever run". If you are building a PPC account against an established rival, that history is the main reason to buy. The PPC competitor analysis guide shows how to turn it into a plan.

Price per seat. Team/Agency is $249 a month with five users included. Ahrefs Standard is also $249 a month but includes one user; four more at $60 each would add $240.

Tracked keywords. SpyFu Basic tracks 5,000 keywords weekly, the same number as Ahrefs Advanced at $449.

Exports. Pro + AI has unlimited results and exports. Ahrefs meters exports in rows per month.

Where Ahrefs wins

Backlinks. Not close. Link building, link audits and working out why a competitor outranks you on links all belong in Ahrefs.

Countries. 217 keyword locations against SpyFu's 38 countries. If you work outside the major markets, check that SpyFu covers yours before you pay.

Site audits and content. Ahrefs crawls sites for technical audits (Lite includes 100,000 crawl credits), and Content Explorer, from Standard up, finds the content on a topic that earned links and traffic.

One tool for an SEO team. Keyword research, rank tracking, audits and links in one login. SpyFu covers the competitor half of that well and the rest lightly.

The bill for a small team

By our arithmetic from the published prices, for three people on monthly billing:

SpyFu Pro + AIAhrefs Lite
Base plan$119 (after a $59 first month)$129
Two extra users$60$80
Total a month$179$209

On annual billing the SpyFu plan falls to $89 a month. Ahrefs did not show its annual prices. Five people make the gap bigger: SpyFu Team/Agency is $249 with five users, while Ahrefs Lite only allows two extra users, so five people means Standard plus four users at $60 each, $489 a month. Full detail is on SpyFu pricing and Ahrefs pricing.

Learning curve

SpyFu is narrower, so there is less to learn: most of its value sits in a handful of competitor reports about keywords, ads and history. Ahrefs has far more reports and settings, and on Lite its 1,000 credits per user a month mean you learn to be deliberate about what you open. Neither is hard for someone who does search marketing for a living. Ahrefs is harder for an owner who opens it once a month.

Pick SpyFu or Ahrefs

Pick SpyFu if you run Google Ads, want years of a competitor's keyword and ad history, track thousands of keywords, or need several seats on a small budget.

Pick Ahrefs if backlinks matter, you work in many countries, or you need audits and content research in the same tool as your keyword work.

Run both if you are an agency doing SEO and PPC. SpyFu Basic at $29 a month billed annually is cheap enough to sit alongside an Ahrefs plan.

When neither is right

If you only want to see the Google ads a competitor is running today, the Google Ads Transparency Center shows the creatives free. It shows no keywords or history, but it costs nothing. If Semrush is also on your shortlist, SpyFu vs Semrush is the closer fight on paid search data, and SpyFu alternatives covers tools that fill its gaps.

Questions people ask

Does Ahrefs show competitors' Google Ads?

Partly. Ahrefs estimates paid search traffic from ad positions, search volume and click-through rates, and says its paid data is aggregated at country level. SpyFu is built around ad and keyword history, so it is the stronger of the two for PPC research.

Is SpyFu data accurate?

Like every tool of its kind, SpyFu estimates rather than measures. It records which ads and rankings appear in search results, not a competitor's real spend or clicks, so use its figures to compare rivals and spot trends rather than as exact budgets.

Does SpyFu have a free trial?

Not on its pricing page. It offers a 30-day money-back guarantee instead and lets you cancel any time. Ahrefs has no trial either, only Ahrefs Free for sites you own.

Can SpyFu replace Ahrefs for SEO?

For competitor keyword and ranking research it covers a lot of the same ground for less. For backlink work, large site audits and content research it is not a replacement.
