The best SEO competitor analysis tools in 2026
What each platform costs today, which one has the best data for which job, and how much of this you can do in Search Console for nothing.
Five platforms dominate this, they all have the same core features, and the differences are narrower than their marketing suggests. Prices were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 19 September 2026.
What they cost
| Tool | Entry | Top published tier | Extra users |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | $139/mo | $549/mo | $45 to $100/user |
| Ahrefs | $129/mo | $1,499/mo | $40 to $80/user |
| SpyFu | $39 first month, then $119/mo | Team tier | $30/user |
| Similarweb | Not published | Not published | Not published |
| Figo | $49/mo | $249/mo | Included in workspace count |
Ahrefs and Semrush both charge per additional user on top of the plan, which changes the comparison for any team above one person. A three person Semrush team on the entry plan is not $139.
The jobs, and which tool wins each
Keyword gap: what do they rank for that I do not
All of Semrush, Ahrefs and SpyFu do this well. The lists differ because the underlying keyword databases differ, not because one is right.
Practical advice: run it in whichever you have, then filter hard. A raw gap report returns thousands of keywords of which perhaps forty are worth acting on. The filtering is the work, not the export.
Backlinks: who links to them
Ahrefs has the best index and has for years. If backlinks are the centre of your job, this is the one.
Semrush is close enough for most purposes. Moz and Majestic remain credible and cheaper.
Paid search history
SpyFu goes deepest for the money. Semrush covers it as part of a wider suite.
Traffic estimates and market share
Similarweb is the standard, largely because it uses panel and clickstream data rather than inferring from rankings, which makes it better for sites that get traffic from somewhere other than search.
It publishes no pricing at all, which means a sales process and, by every account, a significant annual number.
Local and multi location
Semrush has the more developed local toolset.
What none of them do
They are research platforms. You go to them with a question.
None of them will tell you on Monday that a competitor published eleven pages last week, started running ads on your brand name, and now gets named by ChatGPT when buyers ask for a recommendation. That is monitoring, and it is a different product shape.
This is the gap our own tool sits in. Figo runs the search data weekly rather than on demand, at $49 a month for three competitors and $99 for eight, and reports what changed alongside ads, content, social, reviews and AI visibility in a written briefing.
It is not as deep as Ahrefs or Semrush on search, and we would not claim otherwise. There is no backlink index, no keyword research workflow, no site audit. If your job is SEO all day, buy a real SEO platform. If your job is knowing what competitors are doing, the depth you need is much shallower than the depth they sell.
What you can do for nothing
Google Search Console. Your own queries, your own positions, your own losses. Free, and underused by nearly everybody who pays for a platform.
The actual SERP, in incognito. Who ranks, what they titled it, which page type won. Ten minutes on your five main terms teaches you more than most reports.
Their sitemap.xml. Every page they have, usually with dates. Diff it monthly to see exactly what they publish.
Google Trends. Relative brand interest over time.
That is not a substitute for a keyword database. It is enough to know whether you have a problem worth buying a database to solve.
Choosing
- Backlinks are central: Ahrefs.
- You want the widest toolset and do paid search too: Semrush.
- Paid search history on a budget: SpyFu.
- Market share and non search traffic: Similarweb, and prepare for a sales call.
- You want it watched weekly rather than researched occasionally: a monitor, ours or otherwise.
- You have no budget: Search Console and the SERP, honestly.
Questions people ask
Semrush or Ahrefs for competitor research?
Ahrefs has the better backlink index and a cleaner interface. Semrush has broader tooling including paid search and local. For keyword gap work specifically they are close enough that price and habit should decide it.
Are traffic estimates accurate?
They are modelled from ranking positions and estimated search volume. Directionally useful, routinely wrong by a factor of two or more on individual sites. Never put one in a client report as a fact.
Can I do competitor SEO research for free?
Partly. Search Console gives you your own data, and reading the actual SERP tells you a lot. What you cannot get free is a competitor's full keyword set.
What is the cheapest tool with a real keyword gap feature?
Among the big platforms, SpyFu at $119 a month after the intro month. The major platforms all start above $129.

Figo checks their ads, pages, rankings, reviews and AI answers every week, then tells you what to do in plain words. Set up in two minutes.
