Brand mentions: what they are and why they matter

Brand mentions are any place your brand is named online. Linked vs unlinked, why they matter for SEO and AI answers, and how to track yours and competitors'.

A brand mention is any reference to your brand name online, in an article, review, forum thread, social post, podcast page or video, whether or not it links to your website.

Brand mentions matter for three reasons: they are how buyers hear about you before they visit, they are part of how search engines judge your reputation, and they are much of what AI tools learn about you from. Competitors' mentions matter for the same reasons, which is why it pays to track both.

Linked vs unlinked brand mentions

Unlinked mentions are the easier opportunity. Someone already chose to write about you, so asking them to add a link is a small favour rather than a cold pitch. The unlinked brand mentions guide covers how to find them and what to say.

Brand mentions and SEO

Links are a long-established ranking signal. Unlinked mentions are less clear-cut, and Google does not publish the weight it gives them, so be wary of anyone quoting a precise effect.

What Google does publish is how it wants quality judged. Its Search Quality Rater Guidelines tell human raters to research a website's reputation through "independent reviews, references, recommendations by experts, news articles, and other sources", and that when a site's claims about itself disagree with reputable independent sources, "trust the independent sources." Raters do not set rankings, as the guidelines themselves say. Their ratings are used to measure how well Google's search systems are working, which makes the guidelines a fair description of what those systems aim for.

In plain terms: what other people write about you counts for more than what you write about yourself.

Brand mentions and AI answers

When someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation, the answer is built from what the model learned in training and, increasingly, from pages it finds by searching at the time. A brand that appears in comparison articles, review sites and forum threads in its category has more chances to be named. A brand that only talks about itself on its own website has fewer.

That makes the places you are mentioned, and the places your competitors are mentioned instead of you, a practical to-do list. LLM SEO covers what tends to get a brand named.

How to track brand mentions

Google Alerts. Free. Create an alert at google.com/alerts for your brand name, and under "Show options" set how often, which sources, and the region. It works from what Google indexes, so posts inside social apps that Google does not index will not appear.

Search operators. Search for "your brand" -site:yourdomain.com to see pages that mention you outside your own site. Repeat monthly.

Forums and reviews. Search Reddit and the review sites in your category directly. These are where the frankest mentions live, and site search finds things Alerts miss.

A monitoring tool. Paid tools cover social platforms and far more of the web, with alerts. Social listening vs social monitoring explains which kind you need, and the brand monitoring guide sets up a routine.

Tracking competitors' brand mentions

Run the same searches and alerts on your main rivals' names. Look for three things.

Where they are mentioned and you are not. The roundup that lists four competitors and not you, the trade publication that interviewed their founder. That is your outreach list.

What their customers complain about. Repeated complaints in forums and reviews are positioning opportunities.

How the share is moving. Count mentions for you and each rival per month. Your mentions as a percentage of the total is a rough share of voice, and its direction matters more than its level.

Common mistakes

Counting every mention equally. One mention in the publication your buyers read beats fifty on scraped directory sites.

Ignoring sentiment. A spike in mentions can be a complaint going around. Read a sample before celebrating.

Chasing links from every mention. Ask where the page is relevant and the writer is likely to say yes. Mass requests get ignored and annoy people.

Figo picks up Reddit threads that mention each tracked competitor, filtered so threads that are not really about them are dropped, as part of its weekly check. It does not track news, blogs or forums beyond Reddit, so pair it with alerts for the wider web.

Questions people ask

Do brand mentions without a link help SEO?

Not in the direct way a link does, and Google publishes no list of ranking factors that settles it. They do feed the reputation signals Google says it looks for, they can be turned into links, and they shape what AI tools say about you.

Are negative brand mentions bad for SEO?

A few are normal and expected. A persistent pattern of credible complaints is a reputation problem, and Google's rater guidelines treat credible reports of fraud or financial wrongdoing as evidence of an extremely negative reputation.

Do social media posts count as brand mentions?

Yes. Any public reference counts. Social mentions matter most for reputation and customer service, while mentions on pages search engines can index, such as articles, reviews and forum threads, are the ones search and AI tools are most likely to see.

How many brand mentions does a business need?

There is no target number. What matters is where you are mentioned compared with competitors, especially in the reviews, roundups and forums your buyers actually read.
