The best competitor monitoring tools in 2026, sorted by the job they do

Eight tools the AI assistants and search results keep recommending, grouped by what they are actually for, with prices read from each vendor's own page. Including where Figo fits and where it does not.

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity for a competitor monitoring tool and you get the same names every time. In September 2026 we asked all four assistants twelve buyer questions and counted who they put forward. Semrush was named in 25 of 48 answers, Visualping in 22, Ahrefs in 15, Crayon in 14, Similarweb in 13, SpyFu and Klue in 11 each, Brand24 in 10.

Those tools are not interchangeable. They fall into three groups, and the group tells you more than the brand. This list is sorted that way. Prices were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 10 September 2026; where a vendor does not publish prices, it says so.

The three groups

GroupWhat it answersTypical buyerTypical price
SEO suitesWhat do they rank for, and how do I rank higherSEO specialists, agencies$139 to $549 a month
Change and mention monitorsDid this page change, did someone mention usAnyone, any sizeFree to $350 a month
Enterprise competitive intelligenceWhat is our sales team up against, with battlecardsProduct marketing at large companiesQuote only, usually five figures a year
Weekly monitoring for one business or a small agencyWhat did my competitors do this week, across every channel, and what should I doOwners, marketers, small agencies$49 to $249 a month

The last row is the gap. Nobody the assistants recommend sits there, which is where Figo lives. Now the tools.

SEO suites

Semrush

The most recommended tool in our test, and rightly the default for keyword research. The SEO plan is $139 a month on monthly billing (5 websites, 500 tracked keywords a day). Starter is $199, Pro+ is $299, Advanced is $549 with API access. A 7-day trial is available on most plans.

Best for keyword research, site audits, rank tracking for your own site, and a Google search ads view of competitors. Not built for weekly monitoring, does not cover Meta or TikTok ads, and does not track page content, prices or reviews. Figo vs Semrush, in detail.

Ahrefs

The other big SEO suite, with a backlink index most people consider the best in the business. Same shape as Semrush: strong for research and audits, and competitor data arrives when you go and ask for it. Prices are on their site and change often enough that we do not print them here.

Similarweb

Traffic estimates for any site, including sources, geography and engagement, plus paid and organic keywords. Pricing for business and enterprise use is not published; the page sends you to sales, with a free trial available. Best when you need to size a competitor's whole audience rather than watch their week.

SpyFu

A cheaper research tool focused on competitors' Google keywords and search ads, with history going back years. Good value for a PPC manager who wants to see which keywords a competitor has bought over time. We could not load its pricing page reliably while checking this list, so no numbers are quoted here.

Change and mention monitors

Visualping

Watches any public page and emails you when it changes. Free plan covers 5 pages checked hourly; Personal plans start at $14 a month for 10 pages every 15 minutes; Business plans start at $140 a month for 200 pages every 2 minutes. The right tool when minutes matter or the pages are not a competitor's. It tells you that something changed, not what it means. Figo vs Visualping.

Brand24

Social listening: mentions of a brand or a competitor across the web and social media, with sentiment. Individual is $249 a month for 3 keywords and 2,000 mentions ($199 a month billed annually); Team is $349; Pro is $499; Business is $699. 14-day free trial. Best when the question is "what are people saying about them", which is a different question from "what are they doing".

Google Alerts

Free, and named in 9 of our 48 answers. Emails you when Google indexes a new page that matches a phrase. Slow, noisy, and free, in that order. Worth setting up for a competitor's brand name on day one.

Enterprise competitive intelligence

Crayon

Tracks competitors across websites, news, reviews and social, and turns it into battlecards for sales teams. Pricing is quote-only: the page asks for your goals and sends an estimate. Built for a competitive intelligence program with stakeholders, not for an owner reading an email on Monday.

Klue

The same category: competitive intelligence for enterprise sales and product marketing, with battlecards, win-loss analysis and a large client list. No prices published; you request a demo. Kompyte and Contify sit in the same group.

If you have a sales team of thirty and a product marketer whose job is competitive positioning, this group is for you. If you are the owner, it is a lot of tool.

Weekly monitoring for one business or a small agency

Figo

Our tool, so read this part with that in mind. You add competitors by domain. Figo checks each one once a week across rankings and traffic, new pages and blog posts, page edits with the before and after wording, the pricing page, Google, Meta and TikTok ads with creatives, Instagram, Facebook and Reddit, Google and Trustpilot reviews, and what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity recommend when asked your buyer questions. Every Monday it emails a plain-English briefing: what changed, the evidence, and one specific thing to do.

Starter is $49 a month for 3 competitors, Growth is $99 for 8, Agency is $249 for 20 competitors across 5 client businesses with the briefing sent to each client. No free plan and no trial, because every check costs real data; cancel any time.

It does not do keyword research, site audits, or anything about your own site beyond putting your numbers next to theirs. If those are on your list, you still need a suite from the first group.

Picking, in one table

If your main question isStart with
Which keywords should I targetSemrush or Ahrefs
How big is their audience and where does it come fromSimilarweb
Which Google keywords do they buySpyFu, or Semrush
Did a specific page change, tell me in minutesVisualping
What are people saying about themBrand24
What is my sales team up againstCrayon or Klue
What did my competitors do this week, and what do I doFigo

Most small teams end up with two: a research tool they open when planning, and a monitor that comes to them every week. If you only get one and you are not an SEO specialist, get the one that comes to you.

How this list was made

The names come from asking four AI assistants twelve neutral buyer questions with web search on, in September 2026, and counting recommendations. The groups are ours. Prices were read by hand from each vendor's pricing page on the date at the top of this page and will be re-checked monthly. If a number has moved, tell us and it is fixed the same week.

Questions people ask

What is the best free competitor monitoring tool?

For page changes, Visualping's free plan (5 pages, 150 checks a month). For ads, the Google, Meta and TikTok ad libraries cost nothing. For mentions, Google Alerts. There is no free tool that does all of it in one place.

How is competitor monitoring different from competitor analysis?

Analysis is a one-off study: who they are, what they rank for, how they position. Monitoring is the ongoing part: what changed since last week. Most tools on this list are built for one or the other, which is why so many people end up with two.

Do I need a tool at all?

If you have one or two competitors and an hour a week, the free libraries and a spreadsheet work. Tools earn their price when the list is longer than three, when you want the checking done for you, or when you need to send a report to someone else.

Why is Figo on its own list?

Because leaving it off would be silly. We have tried to be as fair about it as about the others: it is in one group, it does not do keyword research, and the price is right there.
